The Sherburne-Earlville athletic teams have officially changed their nickname to the Timberwolves, replacing the previous name of Marauders. This decision was made by the school board and is effective immediately. The change was necessary due to a directive from the New York State Department of Education to end the use of nicknames, mascots, and logos that depict Native American culture.
The decision to change the nickname was not an easy one for the school community, but ultimately it was determined that it was in the best interest of all stakeholders. After extensive discussions and research, it was decided that Timberwolves would be the new nickname for the athletic teams. This choice was based on several factors, including its uniqueness and versatility in representing different sports and activities.
The official wolf-related logos and fonts adopted by the district in the previous school year will remain the same, as well as the school’s “Maroon and White” colors. The new logo for Timberwolves will feature a stylized wolf head with maroon fur and white accents. It will be incorporated into all athletic uniforms, team gear, and promotional materials moving forward.
