The Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced on Sunday that Cesar Luis Menotti, the coach who guided Argentina to victory in the 1978 World Cup, has passed away at the age of 85. Menotti had a successful playing career with clubs such as Rosario Central, Boca Juniors, and Santos before transitioning to coaching.

After winning the Argentine championship with Huracan in 1973, Menotti took over as the head coach of the Argentine national team in 1974. Under his leadership, Argentina went on to win the World Cup in 1978, marking a historic moment for the country.

Following his success with the national team, Menotti had coaching stints with various clubs, including Barcelona where he won the Copa Del Rey in 1983. He also coached Atletico Madrid, Boca Juniors, Independiente, River Plate, Penarol, Rosario Central, Sampdoria, and Mexican sides Puebla and Tecos.
