In Lansing, the Momentum Center, a local nonprofit, was recently honored with the Hometown Health Hero Award from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) for its efforts to promote health within the community. The MDHHS Director, Elizabeth Hertel, emphasized the importance of recognizing and celebrating the contributions of healthcare professionals and advocates who have a positive impact on the state.
With locations in Grand Haven and Holland, the Momentum Center provides a supportive environment for youth over age 11 and adults with mental illness, addiction, and disabilities. They offer a variety of social and recreational activities, classes, events, and meals, allowing members to interact without fear of stigma or stereotypes. The organization’s mission is to create a space where individuals can come together to improve their overall well-being.
Barbara Lee VanHorssen, the director of the Momentum Center, accepted the award on behalf of the organization. The Momentum Center was nominated by Cindy Anderson, a resident of Grand Haven. The Ottawa County Migrant Health Task Force also received an honorable mention for their contributions to promoting health within the community.
