Appalachian State football player Jack Murphy passed away on April 26, according to a statement released by the university. The offensive lineman was a redshirt junior who joined the team from Marshall in 2023.
The university expressed their condolences and said that foul play is not suspected in Murphy’s death. Head coach Shawn Clark made the announcement on social media, calling Murphy a beloved member of the team and asking for thoughts and prayers for his loved ones.
Murphy played as an offensive tackle, starting all 14 games for the Mountaineers during the season. He received All-Sun Belt third team honors for his performance, which helped lead Appalachian State to a second-place finish in the Sun Belt and a win in the Cure Bowl against Miami (Ohio).
Originally from Fairfax, Virginia, Murphy spent three seasons at Marshall before transferring to Appalachian State. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time, and the university is providing support and assistance as requested.
