Canada has won its fifth-ever under-18 men’s world hockey championship, with Gavin McKenna leading the way. The 16-year-old forward from Whitehorse, Yukon scored three goals, including an empty-netter, and added an assist in Canada’s 6-4 victory over the United States in the final.
McKenna praised his teammates for their strong play throughout the tournament. He credited their camaraderie and friendship for their success. “There was never a doubt in the locker room,” McKenna said. “We played well together and we knew we could come back from any deficit.”
Cole Beaudoin and Tij Iginla also contributed goals in the third period as Canada rallied from an early 3-1 deficit. Ryder Ritchie added a goal in the second period, while goalie Carter George made 31 saves to secure the win. On the U.S. side, Cole Hutson had a goal and two assists, but penalties proved costly as the Americans racked up 31 penalty minutes compared to Canada’s eight.
In the bronze medal game, Sweden defeated Slovakia 4-0 behind goaltender Love Harenstam’s 36-save shutout. Lucas Pettersson broke the scoreless tie in the third period, with goals from Melvin Fernstrom, Alfons Freij, and Victor Eklund sealing the victory for Sweden. Alan Lendak made 25 saves for Slovakia in the losing effort.
