May 25 Declared World Football Day by UN General Assembly

The United Nations General Assembly has declared May 25 as World Football Day to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first international football tournament. This historic event took place during the 1924 Summer Olympic Games in Paris, where teams from all regions participated. The resolution was introduced by Libya’s representative to the UN, Taher M. El-Sonni, and was supported by over 160 countries in the Assembly.

El-Sonni emphasized the universal appeal of football, or soccer, as it is known in some parts of the world. He highlighted how the game is played by people of all ages and backgrounds, bringing communities together and transcending cultural and economic differences. Football is more than just a sport, it is a language that is understood worldwide.

The President of the General Assembly, Dennis Francis, praised the adoption of the resolution, recognizing football’s ability to promote values of teamwork, fair play, and tolerance. He emphasized the role of sports, including football, in fostering peace and solidarity globally. The resolution reflects the importance of football in uniting people and promoting positive values across borders.
