A KSAT crew recently tagged along with San Antonio Metropolitan Health District inspectors to witness how they’re ensuring food safety during Fiesta.
According to Deborah Liu, an environmental health officer from Metro Health, consuming unsafe food can have severe repercussions. Sometimes, food may not be cooked correctly, resulting in foodborne illnesses that might not manifest until the next day. This is why inspectors are constantly monitoring vendors at every Fiesta event.
Inspectors scrutinize various aspects of food safety, such as ensuring that food is at the proper temperature, vendors adhere to proper sanitation practices, and they have adequate protective gear like gloves, hats or hairnets. If a vendor violates food safety regulations, they are given an opportunity to correct the issue. Failure to do so could result in losing their permit and being shut down permanently.
If anyone attending Fiesta suspects anything regarding food safety concerns them, they are encouraged to call 311 immediately and report it promptly. By staying vigilant and prioritizing hygiene and safety measures, everyone can enjoy Fiesta festivities without risking getting sick.
