Windham reveals 700-acre conservation area in effort to support Maine’s outdoor recreation economy.

A new conservation area in Windham, Maine has been officially unveiled to the public after more than two years of planning and development. The 700-acre protected land features eight miles of trails, providing opportunities for bikers, hikers, and nature enthusiasts to explore this pristine area.

The conservation area seamlessly links to an existing preserve in Windham and Falmouth, creating a vast network of outdoor recreational opportunities spread across over 2,000 acres. This network includes hiking trails, biking trails, snowmobile trails, horse trails, and even some ATV trails. Beyond its recreational benefits, the initiative is also expected to contribute to economic growth in Maine, given the state’s thriving outdoor recreation economy valued at $3 billion.

Mark Morrison, an outdoor enthusiast, highlighted the significance of the new conservation area in providing natural spaces for families to enjoy and spend time together. The project was made possible through collaboration between Windham leaders and the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust, with the support of the “Land for Maine’s Future” fund. As one of the largest conservation areas in southern Maine, this expansive natural space is expected to be enjoyed by many for years to come.
