Maxeon Solar Technologies has taken legal action against Canadian Solar in the Eastern District of Texas. The lawsuit claims that Canadian Solar has violated Maxeon’s patents related to its tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) solar cell technology.
Maxeon, a global leader in the solar industry, has a long history of developing innovative solar cell technology. According to Marc Robinson, associate general counsel at Maxeon, the company has been at the forefront of developing and commercializing TOPCon technology for years. Maxeon’s scientists and engineers worked on implementing TOPCon into both back contact and front contact solar cells before the term “TOPCon” became widely used in the industry.
The lawsuit alleges that Canadian Solar has infringed on Maxeon’s patents related to TOPCon technology, which are protected by a global patent portfolio. This marks Maxeon’s first effort to enforce its patent rights in the United States, and the company plans to continue vigorously protecting its intellectual property in other markets as well.
