The rail industry in Italy has undergone a significant transformation over the past 25 years, with more and more people choosing to purchase tickets online compared to traditional methods. A recent study conducted by YouGov, commissioned by Trainline, revealed that 76% of Italians appreciate train travel, which is higher than the European average. This highlights the importance of trains as a mode of transport in Italy and beyond.
The shift towards online booking has been driven by several factors, including comfort during travel, convenience, and sustainability. Young people aged 18 to 24 have shown a particular interest in greener travel options, indicating a growing trend towards sustainability in transportation. When it comes to tourism, Europeans, including Italians, prefer the train for both domestic and foreign holidays. In Italy alone, over half of the population (56%) chooses the train for short holidays and long weekends, while 81% of Europeans plan to use trains for trips abroad.
Andrea Saviane, Country Manager of Trainline in Italy, commented on Italy’s leading position in embracing train travel and online ticketing. Trainline’s evolution reflects the changing preferences of Italian passengers and makes it one of the most successful technology companies and the most downloaded mobility app in Italy. With its innovative approach to ticket booking and sustainable transportation options, Trainline is well positioned to continue its growth in the Italian market.
