Darrell Green’s No. 28 to be Retired by Commanders in 2024 Season

Washington Commanders franchise legend Darrell Green will be honored with the retirement of his No. 24 jersey during the 2024 season, the team announced Thursday. Green, who played his entire 20-season NFL career in Washington, was recently surprised with the news while recording a video at the team’s training facility.

During the video shoot, Green was asked to read a script which unbeknownst to him, revealed that his jersey number would be retired. The news came as a shock to Green, who expressed his gratitude and humility at the unexpected announcement. He described the moment as breathing new life into him and expressed his disbelief and gratitude for the honor.

Green was a standout cornerback for Washington, recording 54 interceptions and winning two Super Bowls during his career. He is a seven-time Pro Bowler, a four-time All-Pro, the 1996 Walter Payton Man of the Year, and a member of the franchise’s Ring of Fame. In 2008, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Green will join an elite group of players in Washington franchise history to have their numbers retired, including Sonny Jurgensen, Bobby Mitchell, Sammy Baugh, and Sean Taylor. A date to honor Green will be finalized once the 2024 NFL schedule is released in May.
