Friedman’s Shoes: A Small Business Success Story

Downtown Atlanta is home to Friedman’s Shoes, a family-owned shoe store that has been in business for 95 years. The business has been located at 209 Mitchell Street SW since 1929 and is well known for its selection of plus-size shoes. Owner Brett Teilhaber shares more about the history of the business and his excitement for the future of South Downtown.

Friedman’s Shoes sells sizes ranging from 7-22 in men’s sizes and 7-14 in ladies sizes, making it the go-to place for professional athletes to find the shoes they need. In addition to their brick-and-mortar store, they also sell their products online on LargeFeet.com.

The decision to do business in Downtown Atlanta was a family affair for the Teilhaber family. Brett’s grandfather opened a shoe repair business in the area in 1929, and his father purchased the store in the 70’s. All four sons now work in the family business, along with a total of eight employees.

For Teilhaber, being in Downtown Atlanta is more than just a job; it’s an opportunity to be part of an area that he holds dear to his heart. He has fond memories of coming downtown to watch games for the Braves, Falcons, Hawks and Flames/Thrashers. With ongoing development projects like Centennial Yards, where old railroad buildings are being revitalized, he is excited about what the future holds for Downtown Atlanta.
