Uber Eats delivery drivers plan to strike next week

Food delivery workers working for Uber Eats are set to strike on Tuesday and Wednesday. The strike is led by the Brussels courier collective, The House of Deliverers, and has the support of the Christian trade union ACV. Couriers are demanding a pay increase of at least 2 euros per trip and 0.5 euros per kilometer traveled, stating that fees have not increased since 2019 despite a 20 percent increase in inflation.

The strikers also criticize Uber for not consulting with them regarding their employment status and the government’s lack of regulation in this area. In August, the labor court ruled that meal deliverers should be considered employees, but no changes have been made yet. The couriers expect several hundred participants in the strike, with a focus on Brussels but also reaching out to couriers in other cities such as Ghent, Liège, and Antwerp.

Despite previous requests for consultation from Uber, the couriers have received no response. The strike actions are part of ongoing efforts by food deliverers to advocate for better working conditions and fair compensation. The couriers are determined to make their voices heard and push for positive changes in their industry.
