Gas grid, the gas transmission network company, has announced plans for Finland’s hydrogen backbone network with the goal of developing an open hydrogen market by 2030. The initial phase of the network will focus on building infrastructure primarily in the coastal areas of Finland.
The decision to build infrastructure primarily in coastal areas was influenced by a market survey conducted by Gasgrid in 2023. The survey found that there was a significant demand for hydrogen infrastructure in this area due to the presence of wind power projects and carbon dioxide emissions from southern Finland.
The route plans for the network will be based on this survey data, and Gasgrid is set to begin mapping out concrete route alternatives starting in the spring of 2024. Feedback on these route options will be gathered from companies and project developers involved in advancing the hydrogen economy.
