Cook County Health has officially launched its Robotic Surgery Program at Stroger Hospital, where patients in need of surgery could soon benefit from this less invasive procedure. Board members and health officials gathered for the big reveal, highlighting the numerous advantages of robotic surgery, including smaller incisions and a reduced risk of complications.
The program’s goal is to provide all patients with the best possible medical care, regardless of their age, race, wealth or status. Last year, over 10,000 surgeries were performed at Stroger Hospital, and this number is expected to increase in 2024 as the program expands. The da Vinci® surgical system will be used for various types of surgeries at Stroger Hospital, including general, cardiothoracic, colorectal, head & neck, gynecological and urologic procedures.
Dr. Alexander Sauper, Chair of Surgical Critical Care, explained that the robotic system provides surgeons with a high-definition view of the surgical field and allows for smaller and more precise cuts. This technology reduces blood loss, pain scarring and complications while shortening recovery time. Cook County Health aims to demonstrate its commitment to health equity and advancement through the implementation of robotic surgery technology to ensure that patients receive the highest quality care possible.
