Consum, a Valencian cooperative, reported a turnover of 4,388.7 million euros last year, marking an impressive 13.6% increase from the previous year. The company’s results grew by 75% to reach 101.1 million euros, attributed to cost containment efforts and significant savings on the energy bill, estimated at 40 million euros.
Consum’s general director, Antonio Rodríguez, shared these details in Valencia on Tuesday. He emphasized that the profit growth was a result of the cooperative’s competitive efforts and successful energy cost savings. Despite high inflation and increasing costs in the market, Rodríguez expressed confidence in maintaining competitive prices for customers.
In addition to its impressive financial performance, Consum also saw a 10.2% increase in sales and ranked sixth in national distribution companies by area with 933 supermarkets spread across six autonomous communities. The company employs over 21,000 workers and plans to continue its pace of investment and expansion with plans for 50 new supermarkets and investments in innovation projects such as digital technologies in 2024.
Rodríguez also highlighted Consum’s focus on sustainability and sourcing from national suppliers with over 80% of fresh food products being of national origin. He expressed optimism about the company’s performance in the face of inflation and market challenges while prioritizing renewable energy sources and photovoltaic panel installations in supermarkets to reduce their carbon footprint.
Overall, Consum has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability in today’s challenging market conditions while continuing to prioritize customer satisfaction and sustainable business practices.
