The ongoing crisis of maternal mortality in the United States remains a pressing issue during Black Maternal Health Week. According to recent data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, there were 51 deaths associated with pregnancy in 2020. Among those, 23 were Black women, 13 were Latina, 6 were Asian, and 8 were white. These stark racial disparities are a cause for concern.
However, there are individuals working tirelessly to transform the maternal healthcare landscape for people of color. Latham Thomas, a doula and founder of Mama Glow, a global maternal health and education platform, is one such individual. She is dedicated to providing a path to safer pregnancies for women of color through her work and goals in addressing maternal health disparities. In a recent conversation, Latham shared her experiences and insights on this important topic.
Shirleen Allicot also reported on maternal health disparities, highlighting the importance of addressing these issues in order to improve outcomes for pregnant women of color. It is clear that much work remains to be done in order to ensure that all women have access to safe and effective maternal healthcare.
