A recent incident in the southern Chinese province of Canton has resulted in 48 deaths and 30 injuries following the collapse of a section of the Meizhou-Dabu highway. The accident occurred around 02:10 local time and affected an area of approximately 184.3 square meters, trapping 24 vehicles. Fortunately, no large vehicles or dangerous chemicals were involved in the accident, according to local officials.
Rescue efforts are currently underway and involve over 500 people working to free all trapped vehicles and recover the bodies of the victims. The 30 injured individuals have been taken to nearby hospitals and are currently out of danger. The causes of the collapse are still being investigated, with suspicions that heavy rains in the region in recent days may have played a role.
This tragic event is just one of several infrastructure-related accidents that have occurred in China in recent months. In December, three people died and four were injured when a section of a highway collapsed in Inner Mongolia. The Chinese authorities are working diligently to investigate the cause of this latest collapse and prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.
