Jefferson Community College (JCC) students interested in the Zoo Technology program can now register for the fall semester or complete prerequisites during the summer. Program Director Dr. Mark Irwin and Keirsten Chiodi recently appeared on 7 News at Noon to discuss the program. Students in the program gain hands-on experience working with zookeepers, veterinarians, curators, educators, and administrators.
As part of this year’s capstone project, students will provide animal enrichment education and presentations at Zoo New York’s season kickoff on May 4. Graduates of the program have found jobs across the country, with some even completing internships in places like Alaska. JCC’s Zoo Technology program offers the necessary training and experience for students to become technical experts with a strong scientific background to provide the best care for animals, educate the public, and participate in cooperative programs regionally, nationally, and internationally.
Starting the Zoo Technology program at JCC in the fall is recommended, with prerequisites in Math and English required. These prerequisites can be completed during the summer session, with special classes starting on May 28 and early and full-session courses beginning on June 3.
