The prestigious 2024 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching has named Laurie Sullivan from Barrett Elementary School in Arlington as one of its finalists. Laurie is a science/STEM teacher in the Project Discovery program at the school, and this award is considered the top honor for K-12 science, technology, engineering, and mathematics teachers in the nation.
Laurie’s recognition comes after educators from Goochland County and Martinsville were also named as finalists in Virginia. These educators were selected by review committees organized by the Virginia Department of Education. Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Coons expressed pride in the selection of these three teachers from Virginia and is honored to have them represent the state in the national competition.
The national selection committee will now review Laurie’s application for this prestigious award. The winners of this competitive award will be announced by the White House. This recognition honors educators who excel in teaching mathematics and science and have a significant impact on their students and schools.
