Verizon, ADOT, and MAG’s pilot program earns transportation award for innovative technology use

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Maricopa Association of Governments have successfully collaborated with Verizon Public Sector on a pilot program that tested a new vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology in Maricopa County, Arizona. The program has been recognized with the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) Award in the Emerging Trends and Technologies category for its innovative approach to V2X technology.

The senior vice president of industrial IoT and automotive at Verizon Business, TJ Fox, expressed his excitement about the TSMO award, emphasizing its significance in showcasing the potential of V2X technology to revolutionize how state and local governments communicate with drivers nationwide. The award validates the viability of this cutting-edge technology and its ability to enhance communication between vehicles and transportation infrastructure.

The pilot program aimed to use V2X capabilities to deliver time-sensitive safety information between vehicles on Arizona’s interstate and state highway systems. By testing and validating the effectiveness of transmitting critical safety notices to drivers efficiently, the program serves as a stepping stone towards a future where vehicles can interact with transportation infrastructure seamlessly.

Susan Anderson, Systems Technology Group Manager for ADOT’s Transportation Systems Management and Operations division, highlighted the importance of positioning for the integration of V2X technology into transportation systems. The program virtualized ADOT’s roadside units and leveraged public Multi-access Edge Compute (MEC) infrastructure to optimize the communication of timely traffic information to drivers.
