In a reversal of its previous decision, USATF has announced that it will be sending a team to the World U20 Championships in Lima, Peru in August. The decision to participate in the championships came after consultation with World Athletics and the Local Organizing Committee in Lima, providing assurance of safety measures in place for the event.
Initially, concerns about travel advisories, competitive readiness, and safety led to the decision not to send a U.S. team. However, after further evaluation and consultation with stakeholders, USATF has decided to send a team to represent Team USA at the Championships taking place August 26-31, 2024 in Lima, Peru.
The safety and well-being of athletes, coaches, managers, and staff remain a top priority for USATF. They are committed to providing the highest level of competitive opportunities for their athletes on their journey to success. The full team announcement will be made after the USATF Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
The last time the U.S. did not participate in the World U20 Championships was in 2021 in Nairobi, Kenya due to safety concerns and COVID-19 pandemic. It is worth mentioning that the U.S will be hosting the 2026 World U20 Championships at Hayward Field
