In Marliens, a commune in eastern France, archaeologists have made an astonishing discovery. The site is home to a horseshoe-shaped monument and an array of weapons and ornaments from various historical periods. At the center of the site stands a large bowtie-shaped structure with a circular construction, measuring 36 feet in diameter. This central circlet is connected to a horseshoe-shaped structure on one side and a jug-handle-shaped feature on the other side.
The findings at this site are unprecedented as there are no other known sites with similar constructions. Researchers discovered a bundle of artifacts that included flint arrowheads, armbands worn by archers, a flint lighter, and a copper-alloy dagger. These artifacts suggest that the site was occupied during different historical periods, with objects dating back to the Neolithic period and the emergence of the Bell Beaker culture around 4,500 years ago.
Further excavations at the site unveiled more intriguing features, such as wells with clay lining from the Bronze Age and a necropolis with circular enclosures containing burial remains and a funeral pyre dating back to 1500-1300 B.C. Additionally, a second Iron Age necropolis was discovered, containing urns with cremated remains and a collection of bracelets and rings.
Researchers are currently conducting radiocarbon dating on the artifacts to determine their exact ages. The discoveries made at this site provide valuable insights into human history and offer new information about different historical periods in France.
