Study: Nail salon technicians experience elevated rates of reproductive health problems

The nail salon industry in New York is booming, but a new report from the New York Health Nails Salons Coalition has revealed a troubling reality of illegal working conditions and health risks related to exposure to chemicals in nail products. Reproductive health issues, including complications during pregnancy and birth defects in children, are prevalent among nail technicians in the state.

According to a survey of 312 women nail techs, 17% have experienced reproductive health issues, 18% have had complications during pregnancy, and 7% have had children born with birth defects – all higher than the general U.S. population rates. Senator Jessica Ramos and Assembly Member Harry Bronson are sponsoring the Nail Salon Minimum Standards Council Act, which aims to create new labor standards for nail salons in New York by forming an industry council with input from workers, employers, and government representatives.

The coalition of nail salon workers, elected officials, and reproductive health advocates are calling for urgent action to implement regulations that protect the health and rights of nail salon workers. Assembly Member Bronson emphasizes the need to address the harmful practices in the industry that prioritize cost-cutting over the well-being of employees. Senator Ramos emphasizes the importance of creating policies that prioritize women’s health without compromising small businesses, showing that it is possible to support economic growth and worker well-being simultaneously.

The report highlights these disparities and calls for legislative action to improve working conditions and address health risks in the industry. The coalition argues that lawmakers must take immediate action to protect public health by enacting regulations that ensure safe working conditions for nail technicians and prevent exposure to harmful chemicals found in nail products.
