Ukraine has recently passed stricter military mobilization laws, which have caused concern among Ukrainian men living abroad. The country’s embassies have suspended consular services for men of military age living outside the country, preventing them from renewing their passports, obtaining new ones, or receiving important documents. This suspension puts pressure on these men and causes uncertainty about their future.
The new mobilization law is set to take effect on May 18 and requires all men between 18 and 60 years old to update their personal information with the local military office. Those living abroad must do so within 60 days either in person or remotely. The aim of this law is to increase fairness in military recruitment and streamline the enlistment process. However, some men feel unsupported and coerced by the government, especially after Russia’s military campaign in February 2022 which prevented them from leaving the country.
The restrictions on consular services have sparked fears among men living abroad that there may be further restrictions or consequences for their businesses and livelihoods. The new law has also raised questions about loyalty to Ukraine and the government’s actions in dividing its citizens. Despite some understanding of the need for balance, many feel betrayed and uncertain about their future in the country. European officials also have different opinions on whether Ukrainian men should be forced to return home to fight or not, with some countries stating they will not repatriate draft dodgers.
