The UK has implemented new cybersecurity laws that prohibit the use of common, easily-guessed password combinations. The Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure rules now forbid phrases such as ‘admin’, ‘12345’, ‘chelsea’, and ‘arsenal’ in an effort to enhance security measures against hackers. Manufacturers of internet-connected devices must now meet minimum security standards to protect users.

In other news, tornadoes have devastated central US states, resulting in the deaths of at least five people, including a four-month-old baby. Oklahoma has declared a state of emergency in response to the disaster. On a different note, the Pope has encouraged young people to put away their smartphones and engage in outdoor activities to connect with others. He expressed concerns about the negative impact of video games and social media on the minds of the youth.

A sports tech start-up has introduced a new helmet sensor designed to improve concussion outcomes in mountain biking accidents. The sensor, created by startup Hit, measures head impact force through a connected app. Former world champion mountain biker Reece Wilson shared his thoughts on this innovation. Additionally, scientists at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh have discovered a new porous material to aid in capturing greenhouse gases.

Meanwhile, researchers at Oregon State University have revealed that a giant salmon species that existed millions of years ago in the Pacific Ocean may have used its tusk-like teeth for fighting. Britain is reportedly planning to deploy a hypersonic cruise missile by 2030, capable of flying at five times the speed of sound. Lastly, the public is invited to share their memories and memorabilia of the London Zoo for an exhibition celebrating the institution’s 200th anniversary.
