Uber appeals reclassification of couriers as salaried workers

Uber has announced that it will be appealing against the decision made by the Commission for the Regulation of the Employment Relationship (CAR) which ordered three Uber Eats delivery drivers to be reclassified as salaried employees. The company stated on Friday that the labor court would have to make a ruling on the case.

In December 2023, three couriers from Uber Eats questioned whether the platform’s requirement for them to register as self-employed individuals was in line with the law. They also questioned if their work should have been classified as that of an employee. The committee ruled in favor of the delivery drivers, stating that their freedom was limited and ordered for them to be reclassified as salaried workers.

Uber expressed regret over the decision, noting that it only applies to the three individuals in question. The company highlighted that thousands of independent couriers choose their app for the flexibility it offers in deciding when, where, and how much they want to work. A spokesperson stated that they will be appealing the decision.
