The optimistic fiber network that connects the border crossings with Jordan from north to south is an extension of the current Cellcom network that spans the country. This new fiber route will provide the opportunity to connect server farms and landing stations at strategic locations, enhancing connection speeds for residents of the south and Eilat. Cellcom has notified its business partners in the south that they will be upgraded to this new fiber network.
This deployment of fiber is made of glass known as “Corning” which has the ability to transmit higher rates over longer distances. This infrastructure is expected to be used by international content and cloud providers, communication operators, and entities looking to back up their existing infrastructures. It will allow information transfer at higher rates than those available in international media and provide a backup to submarine cable infrastructure threatened by groups like the Houthis.
Communications Minister Shlomo Karai emphasized the importance of this advanced terrestrial fiber deployment between Eilat and Be’er Sheva as a response to regional threats. The launch of the new fiber network by Cellcom is seen as a significant contribution to Eilat and the southern region, providing a secure infrastructure connecting the East to the West. The Ministry of Communications Director General, Einbal Meshash, highlighted how this deployment positions Israel as a strategic asset in global data traffic.
As part of this project, Cellcom has also announced plans to upgrade its existing cellular networks across Israel with 5G technology. This move is expected to improve mobile connectivity and enable faster data transfer rates for customers across Israel.
