Sports Court Pavilion in San Antonio’s Hemisfair Plans: Replacing Pond with Recreation Space and Community Event Space

Hemisfair, the organization behind the Tower of the Americas grounds in San Antonio, is currently reviewing a new design for the structure’s base. The proposed plan includes replacing the existing pond with a “Sports Court” pavilion as part of the planned Tower Park at Hemisfair. This project has philanthropic support for funding.

Last fall, Hemisfair introduced the first phase of Civic Park, which added green space to the grounds west of the tower. The new pavilion is in response to feedback from the public about the need for more public recreation spaces. It will replace the existing pond, which has been in place since 1988 but has been deemed to have a negative impact due to unpleasant odors.

While renderings of the project are not yet available, it is known that the pavilion will consist of a concrete slab primarily used as a basketball court. It will feature a 28-foot oval roof to provide shade for spectators. The space will also be available for community events and can be rented for such purposes.
