On Monday, the South Aiken boys’ tennis team faced a formidable challenge in their postseason match against Greenwood. Despite losing their senior and top-ranked singles player, Rowan Degnan, due to a DECA trip, the team displayed remarkable resilience and determination.
The absence of Degnan forced players to compete in unfamiliar positions and on different courts. However, head coach Dee Dee Redd was impressed by their performance under such challenging circumstances. Redd noted that the team was more competitive than expected, given their limitations.
Despite Greenwood taking an early 4-0 lead over South Aiken, the T-Breds rallied to win the final two points. Eighth-graders David Baker and Coda Hughes played crucial roles in securing victories for the team. Hughes won a hard-fought match at No. 3 singles, while Baker persevered through a tough battle at No. 1 singles. Baker’s match lasted over two hours, showcasing his determination and resilience on the court.
Baker’s victory was fueled by his dedication and support from his teammates. His persistence in the face of challenges led to a well-deserved win for South Aiken.
