Perched in the foothills of Tulare County, CA, SCICON is a unique educational institution that focuses on science and conservation. Operated by the Tulare County Office of Education, SCICON welcomes over 8,000 fifth and sixth graders each year to its 1,170-acre campus that borders National Forest land.
The school’s director, Dianne Shew, highlights the importance of instilling a love and respect for nature in young students. Through hands-on outdoor learning experiences such as hikes of varying difficulty levels, aquatic exploration, and visits to a local wildlife museum, SCICON aims to cultivate a deep appreciation for the environment among its students.
Gavin, one of the many students who attend SCICON, cherishes the opportunity to connect with nature and learn about human impact on the earth. Despite facing challenges like flooding that damaged the school’s fragile habitat, SCICON has received support from organizations like Friends of SCICON and a grant from Disney Conservation Fund. These resources have helped restore the habitat and continue educating children about conservation efforts.
With assistance from Disney volunteers, SCICON’s salamander habitat is being revitalized as part of an ongoing effort to preserve our planet for future generations. Dianne Shew believes that education and community involvement are crucial in fostering an appreciation for nature and encouraging sustainable practices. Through its programs and initiatives
