According to a report from the International Data Corporation (IDC), Samsung has reclaimed its position as the top seller of smartphones, surpassing Apple in global smartphone sales for the first quarter of 2024. This marks the third consecutive quarter of growth in the global smartphone market, indicating a recovery from the sector’s previous decline.
In Q1 2024, Samsung sold 60.1 million smartphones, capturing nearly 21% of the market while Apple sold 50.1 million iPhones, making up just over 17% of the market during the same period. Despite a decline in smartphone sales by 9.6% compared to Q4 2023, Apple held onto its second place position with a market share of just over 17%. However, Samsung’s sales only dropped by less than 1%, cementing its position as the leading smartphone supplier in Q1 2024.
Chinese company Xiaomi ranked third in smartphone sales with a whopping 33% growth and Transsion experienced an astounding increase of over 85% in sales to reach about 38 million units. Nabila Popal, research director at IDC noted that there is a shift in power among top companies in this industry which is likely to continue as they adjust their strategies post-recovery era.
