Gazans dismiss Hamas’ celebrations of Rantisi’s death on social media as they have more pressing issues

On the 20th anniversary of the death of Abd al-Aziz al-Rantisi, Hamas is celebrating his life and legacy. The former leader of the organization was killed by Israeli military in 2004, but his impact on Hamas and Palestine continues to be felt today.

Abd al-Aziz al-Rantisi was born in Yavneh, south of Tel Aviv, and grew up with 11 siblings. His family fled to Gaza after Israel’s establishment in 1948. After completing his education and becoming a certified pediatrician, he became actively involved in politics in Gaza. He played a significant role in the founding of Hamas in 1987 and became a leader in the organization.

Throughout his life, al-Rantisi faced multiple incarcerations by both Israeli and Palestinian authorities due to his involvement in Hamas and his outspoken views against collaboration with Israel. Despite being under house arrest at times, he continued to advocate for the uncompromising struggle against Israel and coordinated militant actions within Hamas. In 2003, he refused to negotiate with the Palestinian Authority government.

Following the death of Sheikh Yassin in 2004, al-Rantisi became the de facto leader of Hamas until his own assassination later that year. He remained a public figure, giving interviews and expressing his readiness to run for president of Palestine. His death marked the end of his leadership within Hamas but left a significant void that has been filled by others since then.

Instead of public commemorations, Hamas is celebrating this occasion through publications on its websites and social media platforms. There are no events scheduled to mark this occasion in Gaza as residents continue to focus on their daily struggles amidst ongoing conflict initiated by Hamas.

Abd al-Aziz al-Rantisi’s legacy continues to be remembered by many as he remains an iconic figure who fought tirelessly for Palestine’s independence from Israel despite facing numerous challenges throughout his life.
