The UAE has seen a remarkable increase in the number of patents registered, with over 5,000 in total and 3,415 applications in 2023 alone, an impressive 19.5% increase from the previous year. The Ministry of Economy emphasizes the importance of protecting intellectual property as a key component of sustainable development in all sectors, especially economic ones.

To achieve this goal, the country has implemented a proactive approach by creating a legislative and regulatory environment to safeguard intellectual property rights and support entrepreneurs with innovative ideas and projects. Abdullah Al Saleh, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy, highlighted the UAE’s success in establishing a pioneering legal framework for intellectual property that adheres to global standards.

Al Saleh explained that the Ministry of Economy has implemented three laws to regulate and protect industrial property rights, trademarks, copyrights, and related rights. Additionally, they have launched 11 initiatives to support intellectual property applications. These measures have contributed significantly to a national environment that fosters intellectual property activities and innovation, resulting in a substantial increase in patent applications.

The World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated annually on April 26th to raise awareness about national laws related to intellectual works. This year’s event focuses on how innovation, creativity, and pioneering projects can contribute to achieving the goals of the “We Are the Emirates 2031” vision by positioning the country as a global hub for innovation and economic growth. The Ministry of Economy is committed to providing opportunities for talented individuals with creative ideas to transform these ideas into successful projects that contribute positively to economic growth and sustainability.

In summary, the UAE has made remarkable strides towards protecting intellectual property rights by implementing proactive legislation and initiatives aimed at supporting entrepreneurs with innovative ideas. With continued efforts towards education and awareness-raising through events like World Intellectual Property Day, the country aims to maintain its position as a global hub for innovation while promoting sustainable economic growth.
