The Green Bay Packers have announced a strategic decision to move Alex McGough from quarterback to wide receiver. The 28-year-old spent the previous season on the team’s practice squad as the third quarterback behind Jordan Love and Sean Clifford. Packers coach Matt LaFleur commented on McGough’s athleticism, stating that he had been running receiver routes on the scout team and excelled in that role. LaFleur highlighted McGough’s talent as an athlete and expressed the team’s desire to give him a chance at wide receiver.
The Packers drafted Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt in the seventh round of the NFL Draft but did not choose a receiver or sign one in free agency. However, with a crowded wide receiver room, including Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton, Malik Heath, Samori Toure, Grant DuBose, and Thyrick Pitts, McGough could also contribute on special teams for the Packers as he has yet to play in an NFL regular-season game.
LaFleur stated that “Alex has always been an incredibly talented athlete,” and his ability to run receiver routes on the scout team is proof of that. He added that “We want to give him every opportunity to succeed” and believes he will be able to make an impact as a wide receiver for the Packers.
McGough was named USFL MVP in 2023 and brings a lot of experience to the position. With his athleticism and talent as an athlete, he is expected to contribute significantly to the Packers’ offense next season.
