Oceania’s Quest for Olympic Gold: Australian Wrestlers Fight for Paris 2024 Qualification in Istanbul

The upcoming World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers in Istanbul, running from May 6 to May 12, represent the final opportunity for wrestlers to secure a spot in the upcoming Summer Games. At stake are three Paris 2024 Olympic quotas, with all matches being live streamed on the United World Wrestling’s (UWW) official website.

In each weight class, the top two finalists will earn Paris 2024 Olympic quotas for their countries. The third quota will be awarded to the winner of the playoff between the two bronze medallists in the weight class. However, at the continental qualifiers held in Alexandria, only the top two wrestlers in each division were able to secure quotas.

Masuda, originally from Japan but now representing Australia, is currently the Oceania champion in her category but was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the African & Oceania qualifiers. Similarly, Barns, the Oceania champion in his weight class, was defeated in the quarter-finals at the continental qualifiers in Alexandria. Despite this setback, Australia has won three Olympic wrestling medals – one silver and two bronze – but their last medal was at the 1948 London Games, with no Australian wrestlers competing at Tokyo 2020.

To watch the World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers 2024 live in Australia, viewers can stream the event on UWW’s official website as there will be no live broadcast on any TV channel in Australia. The schedule for Australian wrestlers at these qualifiers is as follows:

On May 10 (Friday), women’s freestyle 62kg preliminary rounds will take place from 5:00 PM onwards. On May 11 (Saturday), women’s freestyle 62kg Paris 2024 qualification rounds (semi-finals) will start from 1:00 AM onwards. Men’s freestyle 97kg preliminary rounds will also take place on May 11 from 5:00 PM onwards. Women’s freestyle
