Carlos Adames has been appointed as the new champion of the middleweight division by the World Boxing Council following the arrest of Jermall Charlo. Charlo, a 33-year-old unbeaten boxer, was detained on three misdemeanor charges in Pearland, Texas after his blood-alcohol content was found to be over twice the legal limit. During the incident, he struck another vehicle and fled from the police.
The WBC stated that they would continue to support Jermall Charlo during his challenging times, particularly regarding his mental wellness. After evaluating the facts and circumstances, the WBC may consider ranking Charlo in the super middleweight division. The organization’s Board of Governors made this decision following Charlo’s failure to defend his title since 2021 and Adames becoming the interim champion in October 2022.
Charlo’s most recent fight was a non-title bout in November where he achieved a unanimous-decision victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. With a record of 33-0 and 22 knockouts, Charlo’s boxing career has faced a setback due to his legal troubles.
