The New Life Pregnancy Center is a valuable resource for new and expecting mothers in Evangeline Parish. It’s important to remember that Black maternal health is a crucial issue that needs to be addressed. During the week of April 11th to April 17th, we celebrate Black Maternal Health Week. This initiative aims to raise awareness about improving the experiences of Black mothers during pregnancy and reducing the number of pregnancy-related deaths.
Keisha Malbrew, a local resident, is sharing her story as part of this initiative. Keisha lost her son just a day after giving birth in August of 2016. Her son, Allen Christopher Malbrew, was born premature and diagnosed with Down Syndrome at birth. Keisha was not informed about her baby’s health condition until he was born and struggled to breathe on his own. This experience has inspired Lafayette native Angelica Rideaux to become a Birth and Postpartum Doula. Rideaux herself has experienced miscarriages and has felt dismissed by medical professionals when expressing concerns about her pregnancy. This has motivated her to advocate for other mothers and ensure their voices are heard in healthcare settings.
Racial disparities in maternal healthcare exist, and hospitals and healthcare systems play a crucial role in identifying and addressing unconscious bias. Rideaux is passionate about Black maternal health and works year-round to support expecting and new mothers in Evangeline Parish. She emphasizes the higher risks that Black women face before, during, and after pregnancy, including discrimination in healthcare settings, lack of access to resources, and poor outcomes such as preterm births or postpartum depression. It’s important for communities to come together to support Black maternal health and advocate for the well-being of all mothers.
