Chinese researchers reveal new brain implant enabling monkey to control robotic arm with thoughts

Scientists in China have successfully developed a new brain implant that allows a monkey to control a robotic arm with its thoughts. The high-performance brain-computer interface (BCI) technology is based on a chip called Neucyber, which was developed independently by Chinese scientists, as reported by the Global Times newspaper.

The Neucyber chip consists of three components: high-capacity flexible microelectrodes, two high-speed neural signal acquisition devices, and a generative neural decoding algorithm. This technology involves capturing subtle changes in the brain’s electrical signals, decoding brain intentions, and achieving control over actions through thoughts, allowing the control of machines without physical contact.

The implantable electrodes made from flexible materials reduce damage to the brain and ensure long-term stable signal acquisition. According to experts, the flexible electrode implanted in a monkey’s skull has been stable for nearly a year and continues to provide high-quality signals.

These advancements offer hope for paralyzed individuals to potentially regain the ability to touch and grasp objects in the physical world in the future. The technology could have significant implications for individuals with disabilities and could revolutionize the way we interact with machines and technology.
