The City of Lexington is making changes to its business climate to support minority and women-owned businesses. During a Council committee meeting at City Hall, several recommendations were discussed, including the development of a small, local business enterprise program aimed at reserving certain contracts exclusively for small local businesses. This initiative will help small businesses compete in the bidding process.
One recommendation in a revised Council resolution is to set goals for minority-owned and women-owned businesses when working with the Urban County Government. Council Member Shayla Lynch raised concerns about expanding the pool of subcontractors, as primary contractors often stick to familiar subcontractors. Lynch suggested awarding evaluation points to primary contractors for engaging new subcontractors, which would be included in price evaluation preferences and opportunities for small contracts.
