John Hennessy, who served as president of Stanford University from 2000 to 2016, has been chosen as the recipient of the prestigious National Science Board’s 2024 Vannevar Bush Award. This award recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to science and technology throughout their lives, as stated on the NSB website.
Vannevar Bush, a prominent figure who led the U.S Office of Scientific Research and Development during World War II and played a key role in establishing the National Science Foundation, inspired many with his dedication to advancing science and technology. Dario Gil, chair of the Board’s External Engagement Committee and senior vice president and director of IBM research, expressed excitement over Hennessy being selected for the award this year. He highlighted Hennessy’s groundbreaking work in computer architecture and his commitment to developing the future STEM workforce, both of which align with the values of Vannevar Bush.
Currently, Hennessy holds positions as chairperson of Alphabet Inc., Google’s parent company, and Shriram Family Director at Stanford University. In a statement released by the NSF, Hennessy expressed his passion for lifelong learning, echoing Bush’s belief that science is the new frontier with countless questions waiting to be answered, especially regarding life’s mysteries and those of the universe.
Hennessy is set to receive this distinguished award on May 1st at 2024 National Science Foundation Awards Gala taking place at Renwick Gallery in Washington DC.
