As a journalist, I must admit that I never anticipated Jimmy Carter to be a vain person. However, during a conversation with him in 2006, he allowed a hint of pride to shine through. At the time, he was preparing for a trip to Africa to help eradicate Guinea worm. Impressed by his dedication at such an advanced age, I expressed my admiration to him. He responded with a humble laugh and said that he didn’t mind hearing such compliments.

Fast forward to today, Carter is now 99 years old and has every reason to be proud. In 1986, the Carter Center launched a program aimed at eradicating Guinea worm disease. At that time, the parasitic disease affected 3.5 million people per year in 21 countries. Thanks to Carter’s leadership and commitment, last year saw only 14 reported cases worldwide. The Carter Center’s efforts have focused on public education and teaching people in affected countries how to filter drinking water and prevent infected individuals from contaminating water sources.

The ultimate goal of the Carter Center is to make Guinea worm the second human disease after smallpox to be eradicated entirely. With his determination set on reaching this milestone before his 100th birthday on October 1st, Carter continues to inspire us all with his unwavering dedication to this cause as the oldest living former U.S President.

In conclusion, Jimmy Carter has shown us that even at an advanced age, it’s possible to make a significant impact on our world when we are committed and passionate about something we believe in deeply. His leadership and commitment towards eradicating Guinea worm disease have been nothing short of inspiring and will continue to serve as an example for future generations.

As we celebrate his upcoming birthday this year, we must take a moment to appreciate all that he has accomplished throughout his life – not just as a former president but also as an advocate for global health and human rights. We can only imagine what other great achievements await him in the future!
