The ongoing international crises have put at risk the stability of the international order, and therefore, Italy is committed to peacekeeping efforts in crisis areas such as the Mediterranean region, Western Balkans, and other regions. The resolution outlines the resources allocated for 2024, which amount to 361,597,000 euros, slightly more than the needs set at 358,668,800 euros for 2023.
Italy’s role as a member of the European Union, Atlantic Alliance, and its commitment to multilateralism based on the United Nations system are emphasized in the draft majority resolution to authorize international missions. Specific attention is given to supporting Libya’s stabilization process and protecting navigation in the Red Sea while combating terrorism in various regions.
During debates within the Chamber, concerns were raised about global security risks posed by escalating conflicts and political-parliamentary control over missions. It was emphasized that Italian troops should not be involved in NATO operations unless there is a need for further escalation of conflicts. Moreover, parliamentary oversight of decisions related to international missions is necessary to ensure transparency and accountability.
The resolution also addresses Ukraine’s situation and calls for a strong commitment to peace negotiations.
