Police use technology to enhance investigation into Olly Stephens’ murder

The investigation into the murder of 13-year-old Olly Stephens was greatly aided by advancements in technology, according to senior police officer Det Supt Andy Howard. Olly was fatally stabbed in a field in Reading, Berkshire, in January 2021.

The motive for Olly’s murder was that his killers believed he had informed the brother of a boy they had mocked in a social media group chat. A girl was also found guilty of Olly’s manslaughter, but none of the perpetrators can be named due to legal reasons. Voice notes and text messages were discovered by the police, revealing the boys’ intentions of seeking revenge.

According to Mr. Howard, of Thames Valley Police, technological advancements played a crucial role in accessing digital messages that significantly contributed to the investigation. He discussed this topic in a Channel 4 documentary discussing the force’s digital forensics unit and their role in solving Olly’s murder case. The ability to extract valuable information from digital data eliminated the need for young witnesses to testify in court.

The investigation quickly determined that the key to solving Olly’s murder lay in mobile phones, digital data and social media content of suspects thanks to these technological tools; the police were able to unravel the motive behind Olly’s tragic death without relying solely on witness testimonies.
