Governor Evers recently vetoed Assembly Bill 510 on March 29, 2024. The bill aimed to give parents the option to opt out of classes or instructional materials for reasons based on religion or personal conviction. However, the bill did not specifically mention scientific topics.
Despite a scientific consensus on both evolution and climate change, there have been past requests for students to be excused from evolution instruction. Both subjects are still topics of public debate, even though they have a clear scientific consensus.
As a former science teacher, principal, and state superintendent, Governor Evers strongly opposed the bill. He believed that it would create division in schools and only harm students and learning in classrooms.
