Four people were injured in a shooting that occurred near Seabreeze Boulevard and Grandview Avenue on Saturday morning. Police have apprehended a 21-year-old man believed to be the shooter. The incident, which took place during a fight, has left business owners on the boulevard feeling optimistic about the area’s future, despite the recent violence.
Lyle Trachtman, owner of Seabreeze Fine Jewelry, credits the quick action of law enforcement for the successful capture of the suspect. He believes that the presence of lights, cameras, and an increased police presence in the area contributed to the swift apprehension of Maldonado. The shooting resulted in four individuals being wounded but fortunately, they are all expected to recover.
Police Chief Jakari Young attributes the successful capture of Maldonado to his officers assigned to the Seabreeze substation. Despite this incident, Chief Young remains committed to enhancing public safety measures in the area. After previous instances of violence, including fatal stabbings in 2022 and a shooting outside a nightclub last summer, residents and business owners have advocated for increased security measures.
In response to these concerns, the city has invested in the Seabreeze district by implementing surveillance cameras, additional street lighting and establishing a police substation. Trachtman notes that this recent shooting is the first major incident since the substation opened highlighting its effectiveness in improving safety. The city officials and law enforcement agencies have taken proactive measures towards addressing public safety concerns and business owners and residents are encouraged by their efforts.
Meetings will be held soon to discuss further strategies for enhancing security in the Seabreeze neighborhood as everyone works together towards building a safer community for all its members.
