The teenager from Bolinas, Mint Butterfield, who uses they/them pronouns, was found safe after being missing for a week and considered at risk. Butterfield’s parents are known for cofounding Flickr, with Stewart later going on to cofound Slack. Jyri Engestrom, Butterfield’s stepfather and also a tech founder, expressed gratitude to all those who helped in the search for Butterfield.
Butterfield left a note and took a suitcase with them when they went missing. However, they did not have a car or phone. Authorities had initially stated that the teenager was a voluntary missing juvenile at risk due to a previous suicide attempt. But their safe recovery brought relief to their loved ones and the community following a challenging period of uncertainty.
The San Francisco Police Department reported that Butterfield was safely located and reunited with family. The family expressed gratitude to all those who helped in the search for Butterfield, including family, friends, volunteers, and strangers who provided tips. It was an effort from everyone involved that led to the successful outcome of finding Mint Butterfield safe and sound.
