Growing up, Tyla was surrounded by music and had influences like Stevie Wonder, Boyz II Men, and Brian McKnight. Her family was close-knit and singing and dancing together was a common occurrence. Her grandmother was a singer in her day and it was always the plan for her to pursue music.
Tyla embraced every opportunity to perform, from talent shows to soirees, covering artists like Adele, Miley Cyrus, and Whitney Houston. In high school, she stepped into a recording studio and dedicated herself to finding her sound and identity as an artist. Despite making mistakes along the way, she believes they ultimately led her where she is now.
The success of her song “Water” reaching number one on the R&B charts felt surreal for Tyla. She reflected on the journey it took with her best friend to get there. Her family, especially her parents, were proud supporters of her music career and even accompanied her to the Grammy awards where she won. The joy and pride they shared in that moment was a highlight for Tyla.
With the release of her new album introducing a new sound to listeners, Tyla hopes they approach it with an open mind and that it brings them the same joy it brings her. After a tour postponement due to injury, Tyla is looking forward to a summer tour that promises to be even bigger and better with extra time to prepare.
