On April 30, a bakery in Xuan Binh ward of Long Khanh City was found to be selling bread contaminated with E. coli bacteria. This led to the hospitalization of 560 people, with some experiencing mild symptoms and going home after a check-up. As of May 6, over 200 patients have been discharged from the hospital, while 119 cases are still being monitored for treatment at home. Of the remaining severe cases, 12 have been transferred to the hospital for further treatment.
The most critical case is that of a 6-year-old boy being treated at Children’s Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City. He remains in a deep coma and requires ongoing ventilation and dialysis support. The second serious case is that of a 7-year-old child being treated at Dong Nai Children’s Hospital, whose condition is improving but who remains on close monitoring. The remaining severe cases are currently stable but continue to require medical attention.
Doctor Le Quang Trung, Director of Dong Nai Department of Health, announced that three pediatric patients had been infected with E. coli bacteria and had experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea following consumption of bread sold by a bakery in Xuan Binh ward on April 30th. The shop has since closed down and food samples collected from the bakery are undergoing testing. An interdisciplinary inspection team has also sealed the freezer at the facility containing various food items purchased from small retail stores and processed by the shop without any sales contracts.
