Fortescua and KBR to Collaborate on Norway’s Holmaneset Green Energy Project

Fortescua, an Australian-based green energy, technology and metals company, has entered into a contract with U.S. engineering company KBR to provide its proprietary green ammonia technology K-GreeN for the Holmaneset green energy project in Norway. Under the terms of the contract, KBR will provide technology licensing, proprietary engineering design and front-end engineering design (FEED) support services for the grassroots green ammonia plant in Norway that will produce 675 metric tonnes per day of green ammonia using electrolyzers powered by renewable hydropower for hydrogen production.

KBR’s President of Sustainable Technology Solutions, Jay Ibrahim expressed his excitement about working with Fortescua on this project and offering their zero-carbon green ammonia technology. He said that KBR aims to play a significant role in the development of the green energy value chain and decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries, which aligns with Fortescua’s ESG objectives. The Holmaneset plant is expected to produce green ammonia for domestic and European markets to aid in decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries.

Fortescua has awarded Tecnimont, a business unit of Italy’s Maire, the FEED work for the plant, including designing electrolyzer integration, air separation units for nitrogen production, ammonia production plants and storage and ship loading facilities. Tecnimont is also expected to submit an EPC proposal for the plant’s realization as part of the agreement.

In 2023, Fortescua achieved significant milestones with the Holmaneset project including securing €203.7 million grant from EU for green ammonia plant and renewable power supply through a long-term PPA with Statkraft. This progress reflects Fortescua’s commitment to advancing sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solutions in Norway.

Overall, this project represents an exciting opportunity for both companies to work together towards a more sustainable future while contributing to decarbonization efforts in hard-to-abate industries.
